Hard to believe, the the largest artisan cheese maker gathering, The American Cheese Society Conference, was even larger than last year’s! With over 1000 attendees, over 1462 cheeses submitted in over 100 categories for the competition, it was quite a show. !

Artisan Foods: Agriculture? Tourism? Or Cultural Industry?
The answer is probably all three. But the link least reflected in its governance is food as culture. Is food a form of cultural expression? Is the making of food a cultural industry—no different from publishing or radio? and if so, it is of strategic importance to us? And finally, if this is so, why is it not afforded the same support and protection as other cultural industries in Canada?
